Obesity in America - 909 Words

When discussing the issue of obesity in America, it seems to be that there is plenty of blame to go around and most of that blame falls on fast food companies. When searching for a concrete answer to the question used as my title, you will find none because there isn’t one. When asked this simple question, it is easy to blame the obesity problem on fast food considering 8 out of 10 Americans consume fast food according to a report done by the Huffington Post. But after doing more research you will notice that this isn’t necessarily the case. American obesity can be blamed on a variety of things; lifestyle, accessibility of fast food, and what we are taught about food growing up. However, when the only options you are provided with by the food industry are all unhealthy, obesity cannot be avoided. Obesity has been framed as a topic of personal responsibly for a long time. For many, the fundamental notion has always been that if you stop eating junk food and eat â€Å"he althy†, you will maintain a healthy weight. According to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control’s 2007-2008 Health and Nutrition Examination survey, it was found that 73.7% of all Americans 20 years old or older were overweight, obese, or extremely obese. That is a lot of fat people and it is hard to believe that fast food alone is responsible for 70% of adult Americans being overweight. The idea of eating healthy however is arbitrary. Social Status: Is it Really Important? What is social class in the twenty-first century? There are distinctions in classes but do people actually notice the difference? Most people would say no. People in the early 1900s would say social class was very important to all people. In The Great Gatsby, F. From analysis of capital structure ratios in above table, it is identified that the debt equity ratio of Genesis has reduced from 0.63 to 0.62 from 2014 to 2015. The decline in debt equity ratio of company is providing improvement in creditworthiness of the company in market. Debt-equity ratio below 1 is considered good (Adam and Dogramaci, 2012). Equity ratio generally measures the leverage level in company proportion of assets that are financed by shareholders. The equity ratio of company has slightly reduced from 51.81 to 51.74 in 2015. This depicts improvement in companys ability to produce good returns for shareholders. Apart from these, the value of earning per share of Genesis has increased from $1.15 to $4.07 per share. This is good for companys attractiveness for shareholders and investors. But the value of dividend per share has reduced slightly from 2.47 to 2.23. On basis of analysis of increase in EPS and decline in DPS, it can be asserted that dividend payout decisions of company have reduced. This is also showing companys preference towards retained earnings in business (Vozikis et al., 2014). But, the shareholders of company will be able to enjoy capitalization benefits over their investment. Overall, it can be said that the financial performance of Genesis Ltd has improved from 2014 to 2015. Comparative Financial Analysis of AGL Energy Ltd: The ratio analysis tables of both companies show that AGL Energy Ltd is in good position in context of profitability ratio compared to Genesis Energy Ltd. AGLs gross profit and operating margin ratio are 16.02% and 15.68% for the year 2015. But at the same time, Genesiss gross profit and operating margin are 16.54% and 6.98% for the year 2015. It shows that, management of the Genesis is ineffective compared to AGL (Bhattacharyya, 2012). In the context of 2014, the condition of Genesis was also seemed same. The AGLs ratios were 12.02% and 11.70 respectively. On the other hand, Genesiss ratios were 7.12% and 3.45% respectively. In addition to this, situations of the both companies are not good in the context of firms liquidity positions. AGLs current ratio for year 2014 and 2015 are 1.57 and 1.45 respectively, which is less compared to ideal current ratio 2:1. Genesiss current ratio for the year 2014 and 21015 are 1.44 and 1.11 respectively, which are not good compared to both ideal current ration and AGLs current ration. Further this, Acid test ratio depicts that Genesis is not good in paying its short term liabilities due to its acid test ratio is 0.86 for the year 2015 that is not good in financial terms (Kieso, et al., 2012). In this way, AGL condition is seemed good due to acid ratio is 1.29 here that enough to pay it short term liabilities. At the same time, capital structure both companies situation was similar in the 2014, because the debt equity ratio and equity ratio for AGL and Genesis were 0.59 or 0.53 and 0.63 or 0.52 respectively. But, Genesis condition is spoiled in 2015. The companys debt equity ratio is 61.20%, which is less compare to AGLs debt equity ratio 70.44%. This situation is raised due to company is using less leverage and it has a stronger equity position (Horngren, et al., 2012). The same condition is seen in equity ratio. There also AGL position is strong with 55.67% as compared to 51.54% of Genesis. In the context of earning per share, Genesis performance is good compared to AGL. Earning per share ratio of AGL and Genesis is recorded as 2.96 and 4.07 in 2015. It shows that Genesis is earning good profit on per share. On the other hand, in context of dividend per share, the situation is fully changed. Dividend per share ratio for AGL and Genesis are recorded as 2.94 and 2.23 respectively in 2015 (Edwards, 2013). On basis of this, AGL dividend payout of Genesis is comparatively low. Overall, AGL has more potential to provide attractive return to shareholders. It also causes a bit of humour because the convict keeps saying he will rip out Pips heart and liver.  In the churchyard Pip meets a man called Magwitch who is a convict and Pip knows he is a convict and the readers also do because Dickens says  A fearful man, all in coarse grey, with a great iron on his leg. A man with no hat and with broken shoes, and with an old rag tied around his head. A man who ha been soaked in water, and smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints, and stung by nettles, and torn by briars; who limped, and shivered, and glared and growled: and whose teeth chattered in his head as he seized me by the chin. In Dickens day if you didnt wear a hat you were considered not to be a gentlemen and were worthless so this make Pip sense threat.  Dickens uses verbs such as soaked, smothered, lamed and stung. This is to keep the readers visualising what the convict has been through to escape. Dickens later on writes bout Miss Havishams brewery yard in a very negative way and he implies death is all around and this ties in with chapter one and this is why the brewery yard is deserted.   To be sure it was a deserted place.  Also the word no is repeated often because this reveals that everything in the brewery yard is dead including animal and this is why its deserted.  Later in Great Expectations Dickens writes about how the beer in the empty caskets had turned sour which is a metaphor and this implies with Miss Havisham because she has also turned sour. He also writes about the garden, which he describes as a rank garden and he also writes about how the house is overgrown with tangled weeds. This ties in with chapter one when Pip goes to the churchyard to his parents grave to visualise them and his brothers the grave stones are overgrown with tangled weeds. Which had a certain sour remembrance of better days lingering about them;  Behind the farthest end of the brewery was a rank garden.  When Pip first enters Miss Havishams house he walks into a dark room which waiting for him is Miss Havisham. When he walks in he sees a ladys a dressing table and back in Dickens days if you had dressing table you were considered to be rich.  And that I made out at first to be a fine ladys dressing table.  When Pip goes into Satis house and meets Miss Havisham he realises that she has a ladys dressing table and that Miss Havisham herself was wearing rich materials like satin, lace and silks. He also notices that she is not wearing her watch and neither her train and she only has one shoe on this gives the reader the impression Miss Havisham is half arranged. She was dressed in rich materials- satins and lace, and silks- all of white. For she had but one shoe on- the other had was on the table near her hand- her veil was but half arranged, her watch and chain were not put on.  Dickens uses imagery of death and decay by describing Miss Havisham dress as faded and yellow. This implies that she has also faded and lost her essence and immortality. She has also withered, and has sunken eyes this implies she has lost the passion from her eyes and now her eyes seem to reveal a dark past. She also looked liked a ghastly waxwork, which tells us she seems alive but she is no longer living inside.  Furthermore Dickens writes about how Miss Havisham is half dressed and still trapped in the past with all of her bad memories she cant escape. Miss Havisham is stuck in a time where she doesnt wasnt to forget that she was gilted. Miss Havisham has stopped all the clocks because she doesnt want to forget. Dickens creates death imagery again by creating Miss Havisham as a dead corpse and describes everything as decayed and which have no expression to them anymore. Her chest had drooped, so that she stooped; and her voice had dropped, so that she spoke low, and with a dead lull upon her; altogether she had the appearance of having drooped, body and soul, within and without, under the weight of a crushing blow.  The first time Pip meets Estelle he gets very intimidated by her and she is very sarcastic towards Pip and this makes Pip feel small. I was humiliated, hurt spurned, offended, angry and sorry.  After Estelle had intimidated Pip about his hands she humiliates Pip about his background and about how he plays cards and what he calls them. Hes always been like a friend to Joe but because now Pip has been taught wrong what the cards are called he feels ashamed and embarrassed and blames Joe for it. They had never troubled me before, but they troubled me now, as vulgar appendages. I determined to ask Joe why he had never taught me to call those picture- cards, Jacks, which ought to be called Knaves.  After this Pip is feeling even smaller and very scared. He is scared of Estelle because of the way he was brought up by his sister in a very strict and punishable way. This has made Pip feel sensitive and very vulnerable when around Estelle.   My sisters bringing up had made me sensitive. In the little world in which children have their existence, whoever brings them up, there is nothing so finely perceived and so finely felt, as injustice. In a great part refer the fact that I was morally timid and sensitive.  Dickens creates imaginative and passionate images of people and places by the novel being serialised. Dickens teases us by not telling us more of the story and leaving it exciting and imaginative moments.
